Which Is The Best Mattress For Kids?

It is actually a surprising fact that parents tend to pay more attention to their child’s bed design, comforters for smaller children and the bed sheet designs rather than paying particular attention to the important mattress. This lack of attention is actually a great mistake as the mattress you choose for your child is probably the most important item in all of your child’s bedroom furniture as it plays a direct part in helping your boy or girl with their health and correct development.

As we know, children need to sleep longer than adults as they have to build up energy to help with their growth. In addition, children sleep deeper than adults too. Research has shown that sleeping correctly will allow children to enjoy a healthier life, not suffer from stress and have a greater attention span. For these reasons, a good quality mattress plays a pivotal role in allowing your child to enjoy a good night’s sleep and on waking be ready to deal with all the challenges of the new day full of energy and ready to go.

Quality mattresses can last

You should expect a good quality mattress to be able to provide untroubled service for you and your child for up to as many as 10 years. What this means is that you can expect to only need to replace your child’s mattress only once as they grow up and it makes sense to select an adult size mattress before your child becomes a teenager.

If you talk to the staff in bedding or furniture shops, they will advise you that the mattresses that parent buy for their kids vary and there are actually many different types that are preferred. They advise you to avoid potential health problems that a poor choice of mattress could cause a risk to your child’s health. You will find that mattresses you can select come in a range of prices and different comfort levels.

Getting inside the mattress

Before you decide on your short list of mattresses for your kids, it is important to know what is being used inside the mattress and what each type of component offers and how the use of these components determine the comfort level that the mattress offers. The key term here is the support level as this term refers to the basic design and construction of the mattress.

The most common support types are either foam or springs but you can find other support level materials on offer as you shop around.  When you or your child try out sitting or lying on the mattress you will notice that the mattresses will feel softer and more springy or firmer and harder this is reflected in the comfort level rating that the manufacturers will show on the accompanying product data card.

The range of support types

As mentioned earlier, mattresses can come using a variety of different technologies, you can find waterbeds and those with air cells that can be adjusted to be soft or give harder firmness. It should be noted that these types of mattresses are rarely on offer for kids. Waterbeds can be punctured particularly if subject to boisterous play and bouncing and are unlikely to be able to last for as long as you would like.

Air mattresses are also not recommended for children, rather they are considered more suitable for adults or elderly people who may need cushioning relief from pressure points that normal mattresses cannot cater for as well as an air mattress. It is therefore possible to focus on a range of kid’s mattresses that are recommended by doctors and most popular with parents.

Shortlisting the best mattress for kids

For a good budget purchase, you are recommended to check out innerspring open coil mattresses that have a long traditional reputation of being in the reach of parents on a tighter budget and will normally last for a good number of years. It should be noted however that these types of mattresses are not as hardwearing as other types of mattress. For younger children who don’t weigh so much, the basic open coil mattress is likely to give a number of years of good service.

Moving up the price range you will find innerspring pocket foil mattresses, these cost more than the open coil mattresses because each spring or coil, if you prefer, is individually covered in fabric. The advantage of this design is that each spring handles its own load and does not share the load with the others; this means that the mattress supports the contours of the body during sleep.

If you are looking for a high tech solution, you should check out what NASA has bought to the bedroom. Memory foam was developed by NASA to offer a foam material that easily molds to a person’s body shape and then when the person gets off the foam mattress it returns quickly to its original shape. There are essentially two type of memory foam, high-density memory foam responds to body temperature and in a few minutes forms a mold for the body. Low-density memory foam molds and springs back faster.
